Amethyst violet

90.00

Amethyst is a violet variety of the mineral quartz and is the most sought-after stone in the quartz group. The name comes from the Greek ἀμέθυστος(amethustos).

It was the symbol of the lovers the stone of temperance, protector against sorcery and witchcraft. With Jacob van Maerlant, the explanation can be found that the stone drives away drunkenness. It has been assumed that the Greek name would mean “against intoxication”: wine drunk from a cup made of amethyst would not allow one to get drunk.

The violet color of amethyst results from impurities, a small amount of metal ions in the crystal lattice, such as; iron (Fe3+) and titanium (Ti4+). Burning amethyst creates yellow to gold discolorations (“lemon quartz”).
