It has been assumed that the Greek name would mean “against intoxication”: wine drunk from a cup made of amethyst would not allow one to get drunk.
The violet color of amethyst results from impurities, a small amount of metal ions in the crystal lattice, such as; iron (Fe3+) and titanium (Ti4+). Burning amethyst creates yellow to gold discolorations (“lemon quartz”).
